Disability-related housing accommodations ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to engage in their residential experience at U-M. Housing accommodations remove barriers that prevent full participation in campus housing. These accommodations address the functional impact of a student’s disability in the living environment and promote access, safety, and inclusion.
Students in need of disability-related housing accommodations should request those through the SSD initial contact form. Third party documentation is requested as part of the review process for determining appropriate accommodations. If you have previously connected with SSD for academic accommodations, please complete the supplemental request form so we can assist in reviewing housing accommodations.
Once accommodations are determined, SSD shares approved accommodations with M-Housing. M-Housing manages placement and implementation of accommodations.
Housing accommodations are generally not provided for the following reasons:
- Requests based on lifestyle preferences, securing a quiet study space, or to otherwise ensure academic success (accommodations support access, not outcomes)
- Building preferences such as wanting to live in a newer residence hall, near a specific dining hall, or near friends
- For perceived safety or proximity to campus services (e.g., Health Services, Counseling Services, Police, etc.)
- To ease academic scheduling (e.g., planning and time needed to navigate the university bus system that can be addressed through time management)
- To increase comfort or alleviate discomfort, such as avoiding typical roommate challenges or conflicts
- To provide privacy for virtual appointments
- Concerns about living independently for the first time on-or off-campus
- Due to financial concerns (whether related to disability or not)
