Exploring Accommodations Abroad
Going abroad can be a chance to grow, experience new things, and broaden your perspective, but it's important to arrange your disability-related accommodations before you travel. If you are already on your trip, you should still contact Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) so our study abroad advisor can try to arrange temporary accommodations remotely. And keep in mind that the accommodations you receive will depend on the country you're visiting.
Step 1: Review Program Options
M-Compass has education-abroad advisors who can help you review study-abroad programs. They can help you find information about accommodations and explore cultural attitudes around disabilities. You can meet with M-Compass advisories before or after you apply to a program.
Some additional resources you may want to explore:
- Mobility International - USA
- Diversity Abroad - Culture & Diversity Destination Guides
- Transitions Abroad - Disability Travel Abroad
Step 2: Connect with SSD
Reach out to your SSD coordinator to discuss your travel abroad plans. If you have not connected with SSD before, visit Applying for Accommodations.
Step 3: Meet with SSD Coordinator
Meet with your SSD coordinator to complete the Disability Accommodations Abroad Form.
Step 4: Meet with Education Abroad Advisor
Use M-Compass to schedule an appointment with the education abroad advisor or the office sponsoring the program. At the appointment, share your completed Disability Accommodations Abroad Form and discuss any disability-related concerns.
Note: Meet with your host institution to explore if your requested disability-related accommodations are reasonable. There are three ways to connect with your host institution:
- Ask your education-abroad advisor to reach out on your behalf.
- Ask your education-abroad advisor to send an introductory email to you and your host institution or program leader.
- Ask your education-abroad advisor for the host institution or program leader’s contact information.
Step 5: Apply!
Complete the application process for your desired program and enjoy your time abroad!
